Lead Sheets

Definition

Printed music whereby a single melody note is written out in the treble clef and played with the right hand and the Left hand plays a chord which is represented by a symbol written above the right hand treble clef.

Importance

Songs written in Lead Sheet form are the most practical way to play the piano quickly. Why? Because you are only asked to read one note, the melody in the right hand treble clef. Traditional piano lessons require you to read notes in the right hand and notes in the left hand. Which is like reading French and Japanese at the same time. No wonder people quit piano! If you look at anyone who plays piano professionally they will tell you that they can play from a lead sheet. By the way, music publishers sell what are called “Fake Books” which are compilations of hundreds of songs in the form of a lead sheet. These books are an extreme value as each song is typically under 10 cents each.

Application

I’ve written/arranged over 5,500 songs in lead sheet form. The 2 main advantages of playing songs in lead sheet form are: you are applying your chord drills in songs; any drills that I teach I show the student their application immediately: in other words I never teach drills for drills sake. Secondly, the student is getting a very full sound within the first few weeks of lessons. Think of the months and years it takes to play four notes simultaneously in traditional lessons!  I don’t have months and years, I only have weeks to motivate you as my student!

The following song is Ain’t Misbehavin’ in written note/verbatim form vs. lead sheet form. Notice the lack of notes in the right PDF (lead sheet) compared to those in the left PDF (verbatim arrangement).
