About Tony Caramia

Jazz Pianist/Teacher

Another influential jazz pianist/instructor who has made an impact on my musical career is Tony Caramia. I first met Tony while enrolled in a jazz piano course at my local community college. I loved the jazz harmonies that Mr. Caramia was playing. I had been classically trained up to this point in my life but had never heard such gorgeous chords! After graduating from Harper Community College, I studied jazz piano at the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana with Tony Caramia.

Shortly after I graduated with a bachelor degree in music theory and composition from Champaign-Urbana, Tony went on to teach jazz studies at Eastman School of Music.

In the fall of 1982 I landed my dream gig: 6 months on Grand Cayman Island playing piano in a 5 piece jazz combo. We played “under the stars“ every Wednesday -on the beach-at the Galleon Beach Hotel located on 7 Mile Beach! This gig was definitely the catalyst that propelled me into teaching and playing piano for a living.

So a BIG thank you to my former teacher, Mr. Tony Caramia for inspiring me to follow my passion! To make a living doing what one loves to do, is one of the greatest gifts one can have in life. It’s all about the teacher!
